Las Vegas Hiking Trails Families Actually Use A Local's Guide by Difficulty

Red Rock Canyon is 17 miles from the Strip. Mount Charleston is under an hour north. Here is what local families actually hike at each difficulty level.

One of the most reliable surprises for families relocating to Las Vegas is realizing how quickly they can be in genuine wilderness. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sits 17 miles west of the Strip and draws more than one million visitors per year across 30-plus miles of trails. Mount Charleston rises to over 11,900 feet under an hour north, offering pine-shaded hiking in the summer when valley temperatures make outdoor activity impractical. The timing rule locals live by is simple: October through May for Red Rock, June through September for Mount Charleston. Here is what families are actually hiking at each level.

Easy: Young Kids and First-Timers
The Lost Creek and Children's Discovery Loop at Red Rock Canyon is the first family hike in the valley for good reason. At just over half a mile with nine interpretive posts, a seasonal waterfall, and a shaded grotto, it handles toddlers and early hikers without drama. Wild burros occasionally wander nearby, which tends to make the day for anyone under ten. Note that vehicles entering the Red Rock Scenic Loop require timed reservations from October through May at $20 per car. At Mount Charleston, the Deer Creek Trail near the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is largely paved and stroller-accessible with a seasonal creek running alongside it genuinely one of the easiest outdoor experiences in the entire valley for the youngest kids.

Moderate: The Family Sweet Spot
The Calico Tanks Trail is the trail most local families with school-age kids return to repeatedly. At 2.4 miles round trip it requires real effort sandstone scrambling, some elevation gain, and a hidden water basin at the top but finishes with one of the best panoramic views of the Las Vegas Strip available anywhere in the conservation area. The First Creek Canyon Trail at 3.3 miles adds a hidden seasonal waterfall and is dog-friendly, making it a consistent weekend choice for active families. At Mount Charleston, Fletcher Canyon Trail runs 4 miles round trip through limestone formations and seasonal water flow, surrounded by forest that feels genuinely removed from the desert below. It is comfortable year-round and handles most elementary-school-age hikers without difficulty.

Challenging: For Bigger Kids Ready to Push
The La Madre Springs Trail at 3.6 miles round trip leads through red, white, and beige mountain terrain to a desert oasis with wildlife and historical features that give older kids something to engage with beyond the physical effort. The Calico Hills Trail, running 2.5 miles along the base of the Calico Rocks from Calico Basin to Sandstone Quarry, adds scrambling and route-finding that works well for families with confident ten-to-twelve-year-olds. At Mount Charleston, the Little Falls Trail packs a surprising amount of elevation gain into its 0.8 miles, finishing at a small waterfall that consistently earns its reputation as a satisfying payoff despite the short distance. The elevation at Mount Charleston starts around 7,000 feet, so even short trails feel noticeably more demanding than Red Rock equivalents at valley level.
